Chapter Thirteen

Humans always had an explanation.

Lucifer supposed he could consider this a small favor. The news sources in Rome cited several unexplainable phenomena, attacks and vandalism since the Seal had opened. Dozens of people had been admitted with injuries—some minor, several grave—and at least seven had died. Hell Demons weren’t known for their subtlety and those he’d locked up knew the score. The End of Days had been their promise, their last hurrah. Once freed, they were to act exactly as they were acting—kill, destroy and enjoy their final stint before they were destroyed, along with the rest of the Earth.

They were doing exactly that, and aside from a few of society’s rejects, the humans had an explanation. A gas leak. A burst water main. An electrical malfunction. A driver who’d lost control of the vehicle. Even a spokesperson from the Vatican had come forward, trying to calm the devout in Rome from panicking, including those who insisted they had seen things science could not explain.

Lucifer sighed, sat heavily on the bed and flicked off his television, casting the hotel room into eerie silence.

Strange how the small things could burn. The Seven Seals were often consigned to a place he considered out of sight, out of mind. Each was nestled hundreds of feet below the ground. None but he and Jev were to know their location, which prevented unwanted others from popping in and out at a whim. Not that either of them, to his knowledge, had made visiting a priority over the last eternity. Since setting the world in motion, the Seals had been relegated to the proverbial someday. Someday, when both deities had tired of the world and were ready to call it quits, or start over and see what the next venture brought. Someday, or perhaps never. After all, even to beings who lived forever, thousands of years of vested interest in the world as it existed made the thought of parting with it a tad difficult.

And now someone was fucking with his world. Setting Hell Demons loose on society.

Lucifer steepled his fingers, resting his elbows on his knees. Since returning to his room, and in between news segments and rumination, he’d had his last conversation with Lilith on replay, interspersed with Jev’s observations. The Guardians were solitary creatures. As far as he knew, none had any personality, drive or interest in carnal pleasures. But only a Guardian would have the means to open a Seal.

No, that’s not right.

The Guardians were a different breed, made stronger for the fact that they weren’t Hell things or Heaven things. They had been created in concert by Lucifer and Jev—not from demons or angels, rather hand-crafted in a way the other creatures weren’t. Yet they weren’t the only hand-crafted beings in existence.

There were the Sins, and by extension, the Virtues. And Lilith knew that.

She knew it, and she’d tried to win Avaritia’s allegiance with a string of very believable lies. Then there was Grayson Bailey, whose human life had ended at the hand of a demon wearing the skin of a dead addict.
